Finn Himalayan Serpent 2023

Our expedition to Annapurna Base camp, nestled in the heart of the Himalayas, proved a challenging yet rewarding endeavour for the fourteen members of our team who set out to conquer this arduous expedition. The objective was clear: to reach the base camp of the majestic Annapurna Mountain, which would set out to test our limits both physically and mentally.

The team came together from 204 Field Hospital in Northern Ireland where our highest peak is 850m. We travelled to Nepal to climb to the staggering height of 4130m. We had two weeks to achieve our objective of trekking to Annapurna Base Camp, which would allow for altitude acclimatisation. We trekked 75Km and gained a total of 5300m in overall ascent. Maintaining a steady pace so our bodies could acclimatise and to help prevent acute mountain sickness.

The expedition was not without its fair share of challenges. The steep ascents, undulating ground and unpredictable weather in terms of both extremes of temperatures and heavy rainfall presented challenges along the way. However, with unwavering determination and a strong sense of camaraderie, each member of the group pushed themselves beyond their limits, achieving goals they never thought possible.

Among the team, Lt Shaw, shared his experience: “This expedition taught me the true meaning of perseverance. At the beginning, it was a test of fitness. The long steep ascents for the first half of the expedition were tough, but then when combining that with the effects of high altitude, there is no training that could prepare you for it. The one thing that struck me was how every one of the team rallied around people who were struggling and there wasn’t a single person who didn’t come off this expedition with a new sense of pride in achieving something quite incredible.”

The impact of this expedition extended far beyond personal growth. For the unit and participants, it served as a transformative experience, fostering a sense of unity and cohesion in the group. The shared struggles and triumphs brought the team closer together; creating a unique bond that will carry on into future endeavours.

Among the team, Cpl Kajugu expressed his gratitude for the opportunity: “Being part of this expedition has been life changing. I came from a background where opportunities like this are so rare. This experience has opened doors I never thought possible. It has shown me that with dedication and perseverance, I can overcome any obstacle in my path.”

The planning and preparation for the expedition was meticulous with efforts undertaken to ensure all necessary resources were available to support the venture even down to pre training mountain days. The group met once a month to train in the Mourne mountains to ensure the group were as prepared as possible for the arduous nature of the Exped ahead.

This journey was also not just all about the team and trekking. In fact the team were determined they would achieve something more from this unique opportunity and by their fund raising efforts we were able to support the Gurkha Welfare Trust financially with a charitable donation. This now in turn supports veterans, their families and their communities. This alone created an overwhelming sense of honour and fulfilment for the team to be able to help in this way.

Overall the impact of the Annapurna Base Camp expedition on individuals, the group, and the unit has been profound. It has instilled a sense of resilience, determination and teamwork that will resonate beyond the mountains. Through these experiences, individuals have discovered their potential and they have grown in ways they never imagined.

As we reflect on this remarkable journey, we recognise the power these expeditions have to transform lives. Many of the team achieved personal goals never imagined possible. They provide opportunities for personal growth, foster resilience and help break down mental barriers and a realisation of what can be achieved with the right team support and self-motivation.
