25th Anniversary Appeal Expedition: Day 42

25-anniversary-expedition-day042Gjevsjøen to Devika. 45km 12 1/2hrs. Discipline. That’s what today required, and I don’t mean punishment. The weather had not improved, but I’m rested and ready for a bit of a fight. I felt something settle inside and I knew I wanted to engage. A big day, in less than ideal conditions. Leaving the warmth, hospitality and safety of Gjevsjøen was hard, made harder still by yesterday’s fresh snow, now lying deep in the woods. It took me twice as to get above the treeline. All day the wind drove snow and ice crystals into my face. I had to keep melting the ice from my eyelashes to stop my eyelids freezing together so that I could properly see the compass. Map check, confirm with GPS and I’m moving again… up ahead I sense movement. I’m downwind… they haven’t noticed me yet. For the first time this trip I’m up close to Reindeer. A special treat for being out in this weather. I see several groups of them as I navigate between little lakes ever northward. In May this is a major calfing area I find out later. I come out of the mountains and drop into the forests above Berglia. The couple who have offered to host me tonight advised me to take a new snowmobile track linking Berglia to Devika. It’s getting dark… but I’m going strong and enjoying the tussle with the elements, and I’m really happy. I start along the scooter track, marked with big red crosses as darkness falls… only 13km to go! An hour in I hear engines, and there are lights coming towards me. My host and his son have come to check on me and make fresh tracks to help my final descent to Devika. What stars! 🌟To make things even better he asks me if I like Pizza. I tell him I love pizza and I’m left grinning ridiculously in the falling snow as father and son speed off home
