25th Anniversary Appeal Expedition: Day 43

25-anniversary-expedition-day043Devika to Kvelia. 42km 9hrs. Fuelled on formidable amounts of delicious pizza and wonderful homemade butter oatcakes I head north. First out onto frozen Lenglingen lake following the wanded scooter track to the far end. My options from here are either to follow the road or take the slightly longer scooter track a little up into the hills. I feel good so opt for the scooter trail. The trees are bowed down on either side by the weight of new snow. It’s very picturesque and the the sky is the deepest blue I’ve seen since arriving in Norway. The good weather gods have won the day. I’m enjoying the trail and keep heading uphill, so far uphill that eventually it dawns on me that it’s too far. Hmmm… I’m on the wrong trail and I’m reluctant to backtrack. I look at the map and realise I need to be back down near the road… so if I just short cut through the forest I won’t have to retrace my steps… Not long later I find myself committed to a vertical, deep powder, fallen-tree time warp from which there is no easy exit strategy. I utilise the side bum slide and double ski-air spin manoeuvre repeatedly to negotiate a particularly troublesome section and with relief reach the valley floor. So much for my short cut. I’m lucky to have only lost a few hours and not still be stuck flailing helplessly somewhere in that forest now. (Tonight it’s minus 25C outside! 😱) I head for the road in resignation… but bless me, it’s Sunday! There’s hardly any traffic and the new snow still lying at the side of the road makes it an effortless and enjoyable ski. I cruise along, making up some of my lost time… and reach a gas station 11km from my home for night and discover they give free food to anyone doing Norge på langs! Nord Trøndelag is AMAZING
