25th Anniversary Appeal Expedition: Day 45

25-anniversary-expedition-day045Røyrvik to Viermahytta. 30km 5 1/2hrs. Today’s an easy day… so I take my time at breakfast eating interesting combinations of food smothered in mayonnaise. It’s delicious. I can eat so much at the moment-it’s impressive. The first 16km along a quiet backroad north to Namsvatnet go smoothly enough. One of the two cars that pass me, stops and winds down the window. An old weathered looking man, clearly a man of the mountains, speaks to me in Norwegian… I smile and apologise, I don’t speak Norwegian. He continues anyway and I realise he’s asking if I’m heading for Børgefjell… and well, yes I am! I smile and nod encouragingly. He looks firm, shakes his head and I think he’s saying something about the snow. He indicates above his head… which is a little concerning even though he is sitting down. He drives off, still shaking his head and I’m left hoping that the snow can’t possibly be THAT deep. There’s been a lot of wind… it should be compacted… if it’s really deep then it’ll shut me down. There is a limit to even my trail breaking powers. At the end of the road I hop on scooter tracks across the lake. The wind has filled them in a little but they help and in no time at all I’m on the edge of Børgefjell and the perfectly position Viermahytta. I get inside just as the sun sets and the temperature plummets again… not the kind of weather to be caught out in overnight!
