West Coast Challenge 2023

Introduction: The RAF Air Cadet Ocean Youth Trust Scotland West Coast Challenge 2023 was an extraordinary offshore sailing expedition that brought together 11 cadets and one Cadet Forces Adult Volunteer (CFAV) for an unforgettable 12-day journey along the stunning west coast of Scotland. This voyage provided us with incredible memories and experiences that will last a lifetime.

Day 1: Setting Sail
Our adventure began on August 6th, 2023, as we assembled in Glasgow. After our first meet and an overnight stay, we travelled to Oban on August 7th, where we joined the OYT Scotland Sail Training Vessel, Alba Explorer and embarked on this remarkable journey. The excitement was palpable as we got underway and sailed to Salen, anchoring for the night.

Days 2-5: Sailing and Training
Over the next few days, we honed our sailing skills, learning to tack, jibe, helm, and trim the sails. We also enjoyed a fun game of “banana squeeze” and a memorable evening in Tobermory (or Balamory, as some of us fondly remember it). The spectacular sights of the Slate Isles and the Corryvreckan whirlpool were highlights during this part of our voyage.

Days 6-7: Loch Spelve and Beyond
We navigated the narrow entrance to Loch Spelve, putting our new-found piloting skills to the test. As we continued our journey, we felt a true sense of responsibility, planning our route and exploring picturesque destinations like Gigha and Carradale. The beach days, swimming, and BBQ on the shore were unforgettable moments.

Days 8-10: Sailing South
Leaving the Mull of Kintyre behind, we sang sea shanties and sailed south, spotting USAF Hercules aircraft and enjoying the sheer joy of sailing. We anchored off the coast of Gigha and explored its beauty before heading to Tarbert. Fish and chips marked the end of our Gold Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) expedition, and we visited Tarbert Castle.

Days 11-12: Homeward Bound
Our final leg took us through the Kyles of Bute and the Burnt Isles, with dolphins accompanying us. In Greenock, we conducted DofE presentations, deep cleaned the vessel, received our certificates, and bid heartfelt goodbyes. We travelled back through Glasgow amongst the predictable humdrum of daily life, cherishing the memories of this incredible journey.

Achievements: During our voyage, everyone gained their RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Competent Crew certificate, a testament to the skills and knowledge we acquired. Additionally, six members of our team successfully completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition, a remarkable accomplishment that reflects their determination and resilience.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the following organizations and individuals:
OYT Scotland: Your unwavering support and commitment made this voyage possible. Your dedication to empowering young people through sailing is truly commendable.
OYT Scotland Sea-Staff: To the sea-staff who trained and supervised us throughout the voyage, your expertise and guidance were invaluable. You not only taught us the art of sailing but also instilled in us a love for the sea.
Ulysses Trust, Royal Air Force Charitable Trust, and the Singleton Trust: We extend our heartfelt thanks to these organisations for their generous financial support, which made this expedition accessible to us.
Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust: A special thank you to the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust for providing us with information and an app that helped direct our study of the Sealife and record our findings. Your support enriched our understanding of the marine environment and made our voyage even more meaningful.

This voyage was more than just a sailing adventure; it was a life-changing experience that pushed us beyond our limits, forged deep friendships, and instilled in us a profound appreciation for the sea and the beauty of Scotland’s coastline. We look forward to carrying these memories with us as we embark on new journeys in life.
Fair winds and following seas.
