Jersey Residential Expedition 2024

The TS Vernon Jersey Residential Trip 2024 was an enriching experience designed to provide our cadets with the opportunity to develop new skills, build confidence, and foster camaraderie in a dynamic and challenging environment. From 9th-16th August, 15 cadets aged 12-15 and 5 adult volunteers embarked on a week-long adventure, staying at the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Activity Centre (Crabbe).

Preparation Phase: The success of the TS Vernon Jersey Residential Trip was built on thorough preparation and community support. The fundraising efforts began at the Christmas Fayre, where the cadets actively participated in raising funds for the trip. This instilled a sense of ownership and responsibility in the cadets. Collaboration with TS Jersey was vital in planning the logistics and activities, ensuring that the trip was both safe and enjoyable. Information evenings were held for parents and guardians to keep them informed and engaged with the plans, ensuring everyone was well-prepared for the trip. Meal planning and activity scheduling were carefully organised to maximise their experience.

Days 1-2: After a late evening flight into Jersey, the trip commenced with a range of exciting outdoor activities designed to challenge the cadets and encourage teamwork. On the first day, the cadets embarked on a mountain biking adventure through Jersey’s scenic trails, providing an adrenaline-filled introduction to the island’s natural beauty and a qualification for most cadets. For some, this was their first time on challenging terrain, which helped them develop resilience and coordination. They engaged in beach games and spent time watching the sunset, an experience that fostered a deeper appreciation for nature and provided a reflective end to a physically demanding day.

The next day featured paddle boarding and pier jumping. These activities pushed the cadets out of their comfort zones, particularly those who had never been to the sea or had a fear of heights. The evenings concluded with a tranquil sunset sea swim and beach games, where the cadets bonded over shared experiences and enjoyed the calmness of the evening.

“The paddle boarding was the best bit of the trip.”

Days 3-4: The third and fourth days introduced a mix of skill-based and recreational activities. The cadets honed their focus and discipline with air rifle shooting in the morning, an activity that required concentration and patience. In the afternoon, they embarked on a powerboating session, where they learned how to control a power vessel in bumpy conditions. This was an invaluable experience, teaching them the importance of teamwork, communication, and staying calm under pressure.

One evening was spent around the campfire, where the cadets enjoyed making s’mores and sharing stories. This traditional camping experience was new to many, providing a sense of community and adventure. The next day saw the cadets boogie boarding at the beach and competing in a fun-filled bowling session in the evening.

“Had great fun and I was the best at it (air rifle shooting)!”

Days 5-6: The final days of the trip focused on cultural exploration and joint training activities. A visit to the Jersey War Tunnels provided the cadets with a poignant history lesson, allowing them to understand the island’s past and the resilience of its people during wartime. The joint training session with TS Jersey was a highlight, as it offered the cadets a chance to apply their skills in a collaborative environment, learning from and with their peers.

“I had great fun training with the Jersey cadets going through some new drills.”

One of the most memorable experiences was the catamaran trip, which allowed the cadets to explore Jersey’s coastline from a different perspective. For many, this was their first time on a catamaran, and it was an exciting way to end the week. The final day included exploring the town, St Helier, where the cadets had the opportunity to see the local culture and enjoy some leisure time.

“It was a great experience and a really different experience to what you do at cadets.”

Conclusion: The TS Vernon Jersey Residential Trip 2024 was a resounding success, providing the cadets with a wide range of experiences that aligned perfectly with the vision and mission of The Ulysses Trust. The cadets faced and overcame numerous challenges, from battling fears of heights and the sea to learning to live away from home for the first time. These experiences not only built their confidence and resilience but also strengthened the bonds between them.

Key achievements included the cadets’ ability to work as a team in unfamiliar environments, their newfound independence, and their willingness to step out of their comfort zones. The interaction with TS Jersey cadets further enriched their experience, fostering new friendships and expanding their horizons. This trip not only met but exceeded its objectives, providing the cadets with memories and lessons that will last a lifetime and hopefully will continue for trips in the future.
