Northern Jacobite Venturer 2025

Thirty four Silver and Gold DofE participants from Giggleswick School CCF travelled to Garelochhead Training Camp, Scotland in the first week of their Easter holidays. Accompanied by five instructors and five CFAVs the aim was to complete their training and expedition practice for the Award.

Days 1 and 2 – Training: In the local area around Garelochhead, the teams refreshed their navigation skills and rain on day 1 allowed them the chance to test their equipment and personal admin skills in inclement weather! The training culminated with a group shop in Helensburgh for their expedition food and an evening trying to pack all of it into their rucksacks.

Days 3 to 5 – Practice expedition: An early drop off at starting points enabled the teams to get the kilometres under their belt early in the day. The weather continued to improve, and the silver groups were rewarded with a sunny beach site camp with the gold groups on higher ground in the peace and quiet of the hills. The second day was the longest day of walking, but the weather continued to be kind and the groups passed through beautiful Lochgoilhead. However there were still plenty of navigational challenges and plenty of opportunities to practise their skills. A successful return to Garelochhead Camp allowed time to dry the kit out before a pizza night and long drive back to Giggleswick School. The cadets are now prepared for their Assessed Expedition in October.

Challenges – from the cadets: Learning to work as a team and accepting different people’s strengths and weaknesses, sore feet, not having my phone!
Highlights – from the cadets: Stunning scenery, sleeping on the beach, pasta!

Giggleswick School CCF would like to thank the Ulysses Trust for their support to this expedition. Their funding allowed these cadets and adults the opportunity to embrace the outdoors in an environment different to normal and to push themselves out of their comfort zones. Everyone enjoyed the time away from their screens, connecting with nature and each other.
