The Mark Pendleton Bursary

Honouring a life of service by creating opportunities for the future

The Ulysses Trust is honoured to launch the Mark Pendleton Bursary, established in memory of Lieutenant Mark Pendleton RNR, whose lifelong passion for the sea, service and developing young people continues to inspire others.

Mark served in the Royal Naval Reserve during the 1980s and 1990s. As a Seaman Officer at HMS Flying Fox, he undertook numerous operational and training appointments, including serving as Navigating Officer and First Lieutenant of HMS Carron. In 1988 he played a key role in bringing HMS Charger into service and later commanded the vessel on exercises and training deployments before her transfer to the University Royal Naval Units.

Beyond his naval service, Mark was an accomplished yachtsman who generously shared his knowledge and enthusiasm with others. He actively encouraged young people to embrace the opportunities offered by the Sea Cadets and Royal Naval Reserve, believing that time spent at sea develops confidence, resilience, teamwork and leadership.

Following Mark’s passing in 2025, his wife Karen has partnered with renowned maritime artist Andrew Evans and The Ulysses Trust to create a lasting legacy that reflects these values.

Supporting the next generation

Andrew Evans has generously donated an original painting of HMS Charger, accompanied by an original poem. A limited edition of 500 signed and framed prints will be produced and sold, with proceeds supporting The Mark Pendleton Bursary after production costs.

The original painting will be retained for a period before being auctioned, allowing it to be publicly displayed and appreciated while increasing its value. Proceeds from the eventual auction will also be dedicated to the bursary.

Initially, the bursary will fund deserving Royal Navy Cadets to participate in Tall Ships sailing, helping remove financial barriers to these life-changing experiences. As the fund grows, it is intended that the bursary will expand to support a wider range of adventurous training and expedition opportunities delivered through the Ulysses Trust.

A lasting legacy

The Mark Pendleton Bursary is about far more than commemorating one remarkable individual. It is about ensuring that future generations of Royal Navy Cadets have the opportunity to challenge themselves, develop leadership skills, build resilience and experience the life-changing benefits of adventure.

Every print purchased and every donation made will help ensure that Mark’s passion for the sea and for helping young people continues to make a difference for many years to come.

We are deeply grateful to Karen Pendleton and Andrew Evans for their generosity and vision in creating this lasting tribute.

Together, we can honour Mark’s legacy by investing in the next generation of maritime leaders.
