25th Anniversary Appeal Expedition: Day 44

25-anniversary-expedition-day044Kvelia to Røyrvik. 55km 9hrs. It was -30degrees C when I set off this morning. I decided to start in my duvet trousers and did not remove them all day. Today I covered more kms than any day so far, but it wasn’t my hardest day. Why? Because I was skiing only on roads today. As road skiing goes this was pretty cool though. The further north you go it seems the less they believe in gritting. Which is good news for us road skiers. A couple of cars an hour passed me, each giving me a good stare before speeding off in a billowing cloud of ice crystals. Mostly I’ve been skiing along Limingen lake, which is huge. I was recommended not to try skiing on this lake as it’s ice level varies considerably due to hydro power generation from it. No stress-the road is compressed snow, fast, empty and scenic. Every two hours I stop for a warm drink and to eat something. I get out my last slice of pizza, sit on my rucksack and enjoy the view. My pizza seems to be freezing whilst I eat it. Unusual… but it is a touch chilly. When I get to Røyrvik a few hours ahead of schedule and cruise into the gas station looking for local mountain man Kent I find out it was -35deg C today!
