After finishing their training year at EMUOTC a group of Officer Cadets conducted an Adventure Training expedition in Snowdonia where they conducted training in scrambling, single and multi-pitch climbing.
AIM. The expedition’s aim was to train and introduce Officer Cadets to single and multi-pitch rock climbing, alongside scrambling. This aimed to enhance their mental and physical resilience while boosting their operational skills. In addition it provided insight into the administrative aspects of organising Adventure Training expeditions. The expedition was targeted at OCdts with prior outdoor climbing experience.
Day 1: A simple travel day seeing the exercise participants make their way to and meet at the accommodation in Capel Curig. We sorted our bed space and arrived for evening dinner, issued loan pool kit and had a meeting discussing ability, qualifications, aims, challenges/ constraints and what climbing experience they have had before. Following this we ensured all harnesses and helmets and shoes fitted correctly and performed belay game which refreshed everyone’s memory on both taking in and letting out of rope through a belay. We also confirmed that everyone knew what to do in case of a fall and how to safely lower people. The instructors and I then decided which routes suited the weather best for the next few days.
Day 2 Union Rock, Gwn-y-glo – Climbing: On the kick-off day of our journey, August 8th, we gathered at Union Rock in Llanberis to embark on our climbing adventure. This marked our first hands-on experience, and the energy was palpable. We dove into top and bottom rope climbing to strengthen essential skills like belaying and harness work. The instructors passionately guided us through gear placement and anchor building, climbing basics and group abseils showcasing their expertise and professionalism. These foundational lessons laid the groundwork for an enriching week ahead, igniting our passion for climbing and teamwork.
