In April, the Gateway Academy CCF (Army) embarked on their first adventure training activity weekend as a newly-formed contingent in the Peak District, Derbyshire. All 28 cadets from the contingent took part and, after much planning and support, arrived there with great anticipation and excitement. For the overwhelming majority this was their first experience outside their immediate locality. Upon arrival at their hostel (YHA Hartington Hall) they were soon taking part in various team building exercises which stood them in good stead for the physically challenging activities that were planned in the days ahead.
The next day the contingent moved off bright and early to the Hope Valley where they took part in climbing and abseiling activities all morning. The cadets enthusiastically embraced the challenge of scaling 50ft cliffs and abseiling back down. For most of the contingent this was their first time of participating in adventure activities and all performed remarkably well, overcoming their fears of heights. One of the corporal cadets who had held a long-standing fear of heights managed to overcome this and successfully completed this activity. They were genuinely elated by their own success.
“On a personal level, I got more confidence and resilience during this trip as I got to do the thing, I dreaded the most which were gorge walking. Not only did I overcome my fear of heights and water but I also gave something new a try.”
