Discover Horizons Unseen! – Army Cadets and Adult Volunteers Set Sail!

Ten Army Cadets from across the southwest region and two Cadet Force Adult Volunteers have enjoyed a six-day sailing expedition aboard Challenger 1, navigating the Solent and south coast of England as part of their Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Competent Crew training.

The journey, which began in Portsmouth, included stops in Cowes, Portland, Weymouth and Yarmouth and offered hands-on experience in seamanship, navigation, and teamwork. Throughout the week, cadets practiced essential skills such as man overboard drills, anchoring, knot tying, and tender handling. Despite varying wind conditions, they demonstrated resilience and enthusiasm throughout the duration of their expedition. The voyage concluded with the presentation of RYA certificates, marking a successful and inspiring chapter in their maritime journey.

Reflecting on the expedition’s impact, the cadets and their mentors highlight the profound benefits of this unique experience. The journey not only enhances their technical sailing abilities but also fosters personal growth, resilience, and teamwork. In addition to the cadets and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers achieving their Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Competent Crew qualification, they also achieved sections of their Army Cadets syllabus training in adventurous training and their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award residential.
