A group of determined cadets successfully completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award qualifying expedition, demonstrating resilience, teamwork, leadership and self-reliance while navigating challenging terrain over several days. The expedition required participants to plan and undertake a self-sufficient journey, carrying all necessary equipment, food and supplies while navigating a predetermined route through the countryside. Throughout the expedition, cadets were responsible for managing their own time, route choices, campcraft and welfare, developing valuable life skills that extend far beyond the expedition environment.
Weather conditions and the physical demands of carrying full expedition packs provided a significant challenge. Participants were required to work together to overcome navigational difficulties, manage fatigue and maintain morale throughout the journey. By supporting one another and applying the skills learned during their training, the team successfully completed the expedition objectives.
The expedition delivered substantial personal development benefits. Participants demonstrated increased confidence, resilience, independence and decision-making abilities. Leadership and teamwork were evident throughout, with cadets taking responsibility for route planning, problem-solving and supporting fellow team members when challenges arose.
One participant commented:
“I learned that I am capable of much more than I thought. Even when the walking became difficult, our team worked together and kept each other motivated to reach our goal.”
The expedition also had a significant positive impact on the unit. The shared experience strengthened relationships between cadets, improved teamwork and fostered a greater sense of confidence and achievement. Participants returned with increased self-belief, enhanced outdoor skills and a stronger commitment to future Duke of Edinburgh’s Award activities.
The success of the expedition would not have been possible without the dedication of the adult volunteers and staff who supported the training and delivery of the programme. Their guidance helped ensure a safe, enjoyable and rewarding experience for all involved.
The Silver DofE Expedition 2026 was a highly successful event that provided participants with a challenging but rewarding opportunity to develop skills for life, while achieving an important milestone in their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award journey.
